Gator coach rumors
Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun handicaps the field, based not on inside information, he says, but on the fact that he knows how Jeremy Foley thinks. Dooley believes that the most likely candidates to become Florida's next coach, in order, are Bob Stoops, Chris Petersen, Bobby Petrino and Gary Patterson. He also mentions that Dan Mullen apparently did not impress as a recruiter during his stint in Gainesville, which would be another reason he has fallen on many lists.

Not much new on Friday, according to Buddy Martin of ESPN affiliate GatorCountry.com, but Martin does break down a few names into an A list and a B list. Bob Stoops and Chris Petersen are on the A list, with Bobby Petrino, Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong on the B list. Randy Edsall is also in the picture, but Martin is unclear if he's on the A list or the B list.
Martin also says he's heard nothing about Jim Harbaugh, Kyle Whittingham or Chip Kelly.
For what it's worth, Robbie Andreu of the Gainesville Sun says that Petersen and Whittingham seem to best fit the profile of what Jeremy Foley is looking for.

The folks at GatorCountry.com say that they are hearing that athletic director Jeremy Foley plans to finish the process by no later than the end of next week, if not a few days earlier. Remember that Foley had an inkling that Meyer would be leaving last Saturday, so despite his statements to the contrary, it's highly likely he had already made preliminary calls and winnowed down his list by Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Tom Dienhart of Yahoo! Sports tweets: "The more people I talk to, the more I think Florida won't hire anyone with connections to Urban Meyer." Interesting. That would eliminate three strong candidates: former Meyer assistants Dan Mullen (Mississippi State), Kyle Whittingham (Utah) and Charlie Strong (Louisville).
Those two items would appear to back this potentially big news from GatorCountry at 9:51 p.m. on Thursday night: More than one source tells the site that Boise State's Chris Petersen could be the Gators coach by Wednesday. If this happens, it would appear to be a home-run hire, but don't overlook the lack of success of Boise's two previous coaches (Dirk Koetter and Dan Hawkins).
---
Consensus seems to be that Oklahoma's Bob Stoops is Foley's top target, but would Stoops give up the mansion that he is having built in Norman? The Stoopses have a vacation house in Florida, so one imagines they would be agreeable to living there year-round. (Not to mention that brother Mark is now at Florida State.) Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman doesn't believe that Stoops wants any part of the SEC, and this has to have been one of his most gratifying seasons in Norman. But might that be a fitting way to go out?
ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd said on the air Thursday that he already knows who Foley is going to hire, and he offered the acronym STAB as a clue. Guesses include: Same Thing As Before, i.e., going back to Utah for Whittingham or hiring another hot young coach from a non-AQ school such as Boise State's Chris Petersen; St. Augustine Beach, near where Stoops' vacation house is; Someone That's A Bronco, referring to Petersen; Short Term At Best, indicating perhaps someone like Jon Gruden; or simply the word stab, in reference to Gruden's nickname, Chucky.
Or it could just be Cowherd trying to create buzz.
