More Information
A former University of Kentucky assistant basketball coach pleaded guilty in Fayette District Court on Friday to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Rod Strickland, who was placed in an administrative position on Coach John Calipari's staff after his arrest April 11, was sentenced to a $350 fine plus court costs and 14 days of home incarceration, according to court documents. His driver's license was suspended for 12 months.
According to court documents, Strickland was pulled over after running a red light and nearly striking another car at Tates Creek and New Circle roads. He was initially charged with disregarding a traffic control device, DUI (first offense), driving without insurance and driving with expired tags.
On Friday, he pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence. Two other charges were merged with that charge, and the driving without insurance charge was dismissed after Strickland provided proof of insurance.
The DUI charge was amended to a second offense after the court received a letter signed by the Shelby County, Tenn., clerk of courts stating that Strickland had been charged with another DUI within the last three years.
On Oct. 10, 2007, Strickland was pulled over after being spotted driving northbound in a southbound lane and running a flashing red stop light in Collierville, Tenn., the letter said. He was charged with DUI, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, disregarding a flashing signal and speeding.
Strickland could not immediately be reached for comment Friday. On UK's Web site, he is listed as the basketball support services coordinator.
