Marshall Henderson suspended indefinitely for failed drug test
July 10, 2013 5:08 pm ET
Marshall Henderson has been suspended indefinitely by Ole Miss for a violation of team rules, the school announced Wednesday. As CBSSports.com first reported, the suspension is related to a failed drug test that has Marshall's future with the SEC school legitimately in jeopardy, according to a source. A separate source added that a stint in a rehabilitation facility is a possibility.
"Since the season ended we have talked a lot about Marshall taking a greater leadership role with our team," Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said in a statement. "With that comes greater responsibility, and he must do a better job of living up to the high standard we expect from him and he desires from himself."
Ole Miss football player Denzel Nkemdiche posted a video on Instagram late Wednesday that featured Henderson addressing the news. Asked for his thoughts on the day, Henderson appeared to say, "Sadness, ho." Then he smiled into the camera. The video was taken down about 40 minutes after it posted.
Henderson averaged 20.1 points per game last season while leading Ole Miss to an SEC Tournament title and trip to the Round of 32 in the NCAA tournament, all of which helped Kennedy secure a contract extension. But in the process, Henderson became one of college basketball's most polarizing players by constantly taunting crowds and trash-talking during games. He flashed a middle finger to fans after the Rebels' loss to La Salle in the NCAA tournament and was subsequently reprimanded by the NCAA.
Before Ole Miss, Henderson attended Utah, Texas Tech and South Plains Junior College, and he produced red flags at every spot. The 6-foot-2 guard was once placed on probation after trying to buy marijuana with counterfeit money. Henderson then tested positive while on probation -- reportedly for cocaine, marijuana and alcohol -- and eventually served jail time for violating probation.
