UK Gets Ready For Iowa State

Don't sleep on Iowa State.

They beat both Kansas and Baylor by 8.

Royce White, their star had 18 points and 17 rebounds against Kansas. Against Kansas State, White made the game winner on a baseline jumper less than two seconds to go.

He is looking to become the second Cyclone to end a season as the team leader in scoring, rebounding and assists. Head coach Fred Hoiberg who lost to UK in the 1992 NCAA Tournament also did it.

Tubby Smith's career at Minnesota might have been different if White stayed there. It's easy to believe that not only would Tubby have won a lot more, but he'd have a new contract.

The 6-foot-8 inch 270 pounder ran into some legal problems at Minnesota. He almost came to UK when he left Tubby. White has a fear of flying. He didn't want to take the trip to Lexington and ended up signing with Iowa State where he is very happy.

"He didn't want to get on the plane," says Cal.

If he did, Cal believes he would have become a Cat. White's grandfather drove him to Louisville.

As far as his off the court problems, Cal liked White's heart so he wasn't concerned. He talked to Tubby about White before going to recruit him.

"He's a fine young man and is doing well and everyone should be happy for him," says Cal.

White made the Naismith Award Top-30 list. He is the Big 12 Newcomer of the year and made the All-Big 12 first team.

Thursday night White had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead Iowa State to a 77-64 win over UConn. Iowa State was balanced against the defending NCAA Champs. iowa State had four players in double figures. Chris Allen was their leading scorer with 20 points. Iowa State scored their last 14 points at the free throw line.
