Waxhaw police say this man, 33-year-old Daniel Wood, broke into a River Hills condominium earlier this month, found a man dead inside, and stole his credit card. The card was used several times recently for purchases, police say.

Waxhaw police have arrested a man who they say broke into a home near Lake Wylie in York County and stole the credit card of a dead man he found there.

Daniel Wood, 33, of Union County, faces several felony charges in the case, but police say they don’t believe murder was involved.

“We think the man was already dead,” Waxhaw police Detective Bobby Haulk said of the victim, 53-year-old Anthony Zanghi.

Zanghi’s body was discovered Tuesday evening at a condominium in a gated River Hills community in York County. Police said they believe Zanghi had been dead for weeks, although they have not released a cause of death.

“We believe the break-in and theft happened in early May,” Haulk said.

Police say they think the person who broke into the condominium earlier this month thought it was vacant.

Haulk said Waxhaw police became involved in the case last week, when they were contacted about possible fraudulent use of a credit card at a pharmacy in the Union County town. They learned the credit card had been used several times, dating back to May 4. Haulk said police contacted the credit card company this week and learned a computer had been ordered recently and shipped to the River Hills address.

When police went to the River Hills address, they found Zanghi’s body. Haulk said a closer investigation of the various credit card charges led them to Wood, who police say had visited the condominium several times in recent weeks.

Wood was arrested Wednesday at a friend’s home near Waxhaw.

He has been charged with identity theft, theft of a gun, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held in a Union County jail under $10,000 bond.
