Report: John Calipari attended high schoool workout that was in violation of New Jersey rules

High school coach violates statute

John Calipari reportedly attended one of the offseason workouts at St. Patrick's High School that resulted in the school's boys' basketball team being banned from the New Jersey state tournament, but his attendance was not part of the rule violation that resulted from the workout.

The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported last week that a New Jersey federal court upheld a postseason ban for St. Patrick's, which features UK 2011 recruiting target Michael Gilchrist, stemming from coach Kevin Boyle's attendance at open gyms for college coaches before the start of New Jersey boys' high school practices.

The Star-Ledger reported that Calipari was among the coaches who attended at least one of the six workouts at St. Patrick's.

UK also was recruiting St. Patrick's point guard Kyrie Irving, who went on to sign with Duke.

The open gyms, which took place in October during an NCAA evaluation period, are common at high schools across the country.

But a New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association rule prohibits the state's high school coaches from running or being present for workouts before the official start of practice, which this season came on Nov. 27.

In an e-mail, NCAA spokesman Cameron Schuh wrote, “Whether a high school coach breaks a high school rule would not, in and of itself, create an NCAA violation for an NCAA coach.”

Calipari is the latest UK coach to have his own special-edition Ford, in this case the “Coach Cal Edition 2010 Roush 427R Mustang.”

The car was exclusively designed and will be released through Paul Miller Ford in Lexington.

Former basketball coach Rick Pitino and former football coach Rich Brooks are among the coaches to have had signature Ford vehicles.

Calipari has one of the Mustangs on loan for his personal use.

Who gives a rats? This isn't news, this was a waste of space in the CJ. Cal was at a workout. He didn't know the coach was going to showup and screw the school. That had nothing to do with Cal, and this is nothing more than hating on UK and Cal anyway, and everyway possible.
