KENTUCKY, KANSAS BOTH LOSE; JAYHAWKS SHOULD REMAIN AT NO. 1
Saturday, February 27, 2010, 06:37 PM EST [General]
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – I'm sitting here at Buffalo Wild Wings in Knoxville just a couple hours after watching Kentucky go down to Tennessee.
Top-ranked Kansas just went down as well – at Oklahoma State.
However, the Jayhawks should remain No. 1 – even if Syracuse knocks off Villanova later tonight.
Kansas, Kentucky and Syracuse all have two losses.
The Jayhawks have eight victories over likely NCAA tournament teams, with four coming on the road. Both of their losses were on the road: at Tennessee and Oklahoma State.
Syracuse has also won eight games against NCAA tournament clubs, but only two have come in true road games and both of the Orange's setbacks were in the Carrier Dome.
Kentucky is a clear-cut No. 3, maybe even No. 4 depending on how Purdue fares tomorrow against Michigan State at home in the Boilermakers' first game without Robbie Hummel.
The Wildcats have a handful of victories against tourney teams and both of its losses came on the road – one this afternoon against a ranked team and another at a likely NIT-bound South Carolina squad.
What else does Kansas and Kentucky losing this afternoon mean?
It's extremely difficult for college kids to go in a hostile environment against quality teams and return with a win.
Remember, Kansas and Kentucky won't be playing true road games in March and April.
They will supposedly be on neutral courts, but we know that won't be the case: Both travel extremely well and will basically have a home-court advantage throughout their conference tournaments and early in the Big Dance.

Umm, stupid to keep KU at number 1. Syracuse has beaten and destroyed much better competition.
