DE Simmons commits to Gamecocks

Defensive end Corey Simmons (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) of Atlanta committed to South Carolina on Sunday.

He committed after making an official visit in which he left Columbia with the Gamecocks as his favorite. His parents were with him on his visit.

Simmons is the 20th pledge of the team's 2010 class. National Signing Day is Feb. 3.

He also had offers from Samford and Western Carolina, the alma mater of his father, former NFL star Clyde Simmons.

His former coach encouraged him to commit to the Gamecocks.

"I told him he better," said Kenneth "Gus" Robinson, a former USC linebacker. "This is an SEC school. It doesn't get any better."

Simmons also plays tight end but Robinson feels his future is as a defensive lineman with his hand on the ground.
