Lamb likes role off the bench

Doron Lamb is perfectly comfortable in his role as Kentucky’s sixth man.
Although Lamb was a starter throughout his stellar career in high school, his role changed once he entered the college scene. Despite staring games on the bench rather than on the floor, he’s more than capable of being part of the Wildcats’ starting cast while playing behind a trio of veterans and newcomers Terrence Jones and Brandon Knight.
“I’m comfortable with it,” he said. “I’m doing good so far with the role that they gave me, coming off the bench, bringing energy, and creating for my teammates. I’m getting starter minutes though, so it really doesn’t matter. As long as I’m out there playing and helping my teammates win.”
Lamb made a big impact in Kentucky’s 85-60 rout over Mississippi Valley State Saturday night at Rupp Arena. The freshman guard scored 16 points, dished out a pair of assists and had a block in 36 minutes of action. Lamb did most of his production in the first half against the Delta Devils, scoring 10 points in a 24-4 scoring spree that put the game out of reach.
During the decisive run, Lamb sank a pair of three-pointers and gave the team a much-needed spark against the Delta Devils, who forced seven ties and five lead changes in the first 12 minutes of the contest before the Wildcats pulled away from Sean Woods’ feisty squad.
“I just wanted to come off the bench and get aggressive, play defense, make open shots and create for my teammates,” he said.
Lamb’s impressive showing in the first half earned him a starting spot in the second half.
“He played well,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said afterward. “He (cooled) off in the second half, but I thought he played well. He got to the rim (and) he got layups. He made some bumps, hit some threes, (made) some free throws and (played) with more of a motor.”
Behind the scenes, Lamb has been working on his jump shot and focusing more on his contributions on the defensive end of the court.
“I think that I have gotten way better on my jump shot and my defense,” he said. “That is the most important is my jump shot and my defense. I got way better on that. Coach Cal has got me working hard on my jump shot and playing defense.”
On offense, Lamb has been learning to “plant my feet when I shoot and be ready and in shooting position when I get the ball.”
“That was the main thing,” he said. “When we played in Louisville, we missed a lot of shots because I wasn’t ready to shoot. Coach is getting me ready for that.”
Even when he’s not making shots, Lamb’s main priority being a team player and giving the Cats a lift when they need it the most on both ends of the floor.
“I always try to get my teammates involved,” he said. “When you try to score, they look to score too because they know that you are going to pass them the ball. Coach always tells me to go into the game and be aggressive, but also look for your teammates.”
