Derrick Millar gets 3 years in ticket scam

Former University of Kentucky basketball standout Derrick Millar was sentenced Monday in Fleming County after pleading guilty to two counts of theft by deception stemming from a basketball ticket scam.

Millar was ordered to pay restitution and was sentenced to three years on each count, to be served concurrently. The time also will be served concurrently with any other sentence he receives in other counties in which he is charged, said Fleming County Commonwealth's Attorney Kathryn Hendrickson.

Millar, 42, has been charged in at least 10 other counties in the alleged scam, in which he is accused of taking money from people for UK tickets they say he never delivered.

Millar's sentencing in Fayette Circuit Court was delayed Friday so he could be considered for drug court.

Fayette County prosecutors had recommended he serve three years in prison for felony theft by deception charge and 12 months for each of four misdemeanor theft by deception charges to which he pleaded guilty this month.

They also recommended he pay $13,500 in restitution.

Millar has a drug problem that led to his legal troubles, according to his attorney, Christopher Hunt.

In addition to the Fayette and Fleming charges, he has pleaded guilty to theft-related charges in Clark and Harrison counties.

Millar is next scheduled to appear in Fayette Circuit Court at 1 p.m. Friday. He is also set to appear in Laurel Circuit Court at 9 a.m. that day.
