Lamb A Perfect Fit

Days after signing Brandon Knight, the Kentucky Wildcats added another blue-chip prospect who is an ideal fit for their system in Doron Lamb on Saturday at the Jordan Brand Classic.

Lamb is an excellent scoring 2-guard. What makes him so lethal is that he can do it from every area on the floor. Of course, the high-flying Lamb gets plenty of points in transition, finishing at the rim with a strong body. Perhaps his most impressive weapon is his midrange game. Like Rip Hamilton, he is very comfortable from 15 to 17 feet. He can shoot it off the catch or pull up.

Beyond those two facets of his game, Lamb also is adept at scoring off the dribble and getting to the rim. Because he isn't afraid to put the ball on the floor and get to the rack, he gets plenty of points at the free throw line. He also has a respectable 3-pointer, but he could stand to do a bit of work in that area.

The most vital criterion for John Calipari's system is to find athletic players who bring equal intensity to both ends of the court. Lamb does that, as he showed when he shut down the much bigger Jared Sullinger during a nationally televised showdown between Oak Hill and Columbus Northland in February. Calipari's teams guard you 94 feet. They pressure the ball to create turnovers and bad shots and turn plays into points.

When you watch the way Kentucky recruits, the Wildcats really emphasize guys who can score in transition. With Lamb, they have an excellent prospect who fits that mold. In the dribble drive, it's important that you can handle the ball comfortably and beat your defender behind the 3-point line. If you're stopped, you have to pass it off to the next guy. It's attacking from all angles. When the D sags, you need guys who can make outside shots. Knight and Lamb can do that.

He is a selection committee member for the prestigious McDonald's All-America Game and the Gatorade Player of the Year award.
