Federal wildlife agents shooting hogs from the air

Associated Press

Posted March 24, 2010 at 10:33 a.m.

NASHVILLE
— Federal wildlife officials are planning to again shoot wild hogs from helicopters in Tennessee to try to control their population.

WPLN radio in Nashville reported the number of feral hogs is increasing, causing agricultural damage, environmental concern and perhaps spreading diseases.

The station quoted Brett Dunlap with the Wildlife Services division of the United States Department of Agriculture who said the animals have spread from the mountains and the plateau to near Nashville in Sumner and Williamson counties.

Wildlife Services spokeswoman Carol Bannerman in Riverdale, Md., said there have been two airborne eradication efforts so far in Tennessee — in 2004 and 2009 — and more are planned.
