South Carolina student president apologizes for previous letter

All bets are off.

There will be no exchanging of Firefly Vodka or Woodford Reserve between two Southeastern Conference student governments.

It’s really a shame, because what was supposed to be a friendly, fun thing was wrecked because a large group of people can’t handle a joke.

That joke being a resolution the University of South Carolina Student Senate passed claiming athletic dominance and a better mascot than UK. It was a move that was unique, because student governments aren’t really known for such things, but it wasn’t absurd, like many made it out to be. It was silly, something the South Carolina student government admitted upfront.

Ryan Smith, the UK Student Government president, could have realized the fun the University of South Carolina Student Government was trying to have and played along for a day. The Big Blue Nation, which constantly battles a bad reputation of taking things too seriously, could have laughed this one up and realized the Cats are obviously better than South Carolina in basketball.

South Carolina fans, who have a lot of bragging rights that were evident in the original letter, should have seized the moment and continued to challenge UK and its fans. Isn’t that what college athletics is all about? Having fun, throwing verbal shots at each other and letting it all play out on the court?

Instead, we have two fan bases that took a joke by a bunch of college kids trying to have some fun and blew it all to hell. Please, next time either fan base wonders why they have such a bad reputation, remember this instance.

UK fans, already known for being sore losers nationally, decided to solidify that reputation. Survey 1,000 people (media types to the regular fan) and the odds would be overwhelming in UK’s favor as to who is the better team between the two and who will go further in March. Instead of realizing this, UK fans took the low road and forgot the bigger picture.

In the end, everyone lost.

Below is the letter Meredith Ross, the South Carolina student president, wrote to Smith, apologizing for the original resolution. It’s sad that it had to come to this. Pitiful, actually.

So UK fans, rejoice. The South Carolina Student Government has surrendered. You won the victory, but lost the reputation war, again.

And South Carolina fans, be ashamed for the backstabbing you did to your own fans, your own students.

Lastly, to the South Carolina Student Government: If you want to keep the bet on, I’ll take it. Same deals as before. See you in Rupp Arena.
