Gus Malzahn accepts Auburn job

Gus Malzahn has accepted the head coaching job at Auburn.

Malzahn spent this season as the head coach at Arkansas State. Prior to 2012, however, he spent three seasons -- including 2010's national title run -- as the Tigers' offensive coordinator under recently fired coach Gene Chizik.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to become the head football coach at Auburn University. It's an outstanding institution with a storied football program that I had the pleasure of experiencing first-hand for three years," Malzahn said in a statement released by Auburn.

In his one year at Arkansas State, Malzahn led the Red Wolves (9-3) to a Sun Belt championship and a trip to the Bowl against Kent State on Jan. 6.

Auburn also showed interest in Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, who interviewed for the job Monday. But sources told ESPN that Smart was informed earlier Tuesday that Auburn had decided to hire Malzahn.

The offensively minded Malzahn helped Arkansas State finish ranked 21st in the nation in rushing yards and 41st in passing, while Auburn ranked 80th and 116th, respectively.

Just two years removed from a national championship, the Tigers went 3-9 and were winless (0-Cool in the SEC.

Auburn endured the worst slide within two years of winning a national title of any team since The Associated Press poll started in 1936, and hadn't lost this many games since going 0-10 in 1950.

All of that led to the ouster of Chizik, just 17 months after the Tigers gave him a contract worth about $3.5 million annually through 2015. The deal included a hefty buyout.

Information from's Chris Low and The Associated Press was used in this report.
