The list of possible additions to next season’s Kentucky basketball team was whittled further Tuesday with Amile Jefferson’s announcement that he would play for Duke.

Jefferson, a 6-foot-7 forward from Philadelphia, picked the Blue Devils over UK, North Carolina State, Ohio State and hometown Villanova.

Jefferson is rated in the Top 25 by Scout.com, ESPN and MaxPreps. Rivals.com ranks him as the No. 36 recruit in the class of 2012.

He pointed to the immediate availability of playing time as one reason for his decision.

"Right now, I don't think they have a player at my position," he said. "I don't think they have a guy like me."

Freshman Alex Poythress and sophomore Kyle Wiltjer are projected to start at forward for Kentucky next season.

UK’s attention could now turn to Montrezl Harrell, a 6-foot-7 forward who played his final year of high school last season at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia.

Harrell had signed with Virginia Tech but asked for a release from his letter of intent after the firing of head coach Seth Greenberg. New coach James Johnson implied over the weekend that he would grant that release, but the player’s father told 24/7 Sports that the school had not done so as of Monday night.

Virginia Tech is still expected to release Harrell from the letter, and Kentucky will likely be among the teams to contact him once he becomes an uncommitted recruit.

Harrell is a Top 100-rated player in the class of 2012 by Rivals (No. 82), Scout (No. 72) and ESPN (No. 89).

On Monday night, one-time UK target Mislav Brzoja committed to Northwestern. Brzoja visited Kentucky last month and worked out with several UK players, but was not offered a scholarship.

The commitment of Wright State transfer Julius Mays on Sunday all but ended the possibility that Brzoja would join the Wildcats.
