Haircut will make UK recruit Nerlens Noel easy to spot at Jordan Brand Classic

Center Nerlens Noel will be easy to spot Saturday night at the Jordan Brand Classic All-America high school boys’ basketball game.

Noel will be the player on the East team with the huge wingspan, long arms and high-top fade straight out of the early 1990s.

Noel is listed at 6-foot-10, but give him 7 feet with his hair.

The look is a nod to actor Will Smith, who sported the fade on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” the popular ’90s sitcom that’s still in syndication. Noel said he used to watch reruns of the show every night before turning in.

“Just watching Will Smith, he was a role model to me,” Noel said. “I just wanted to be like him growing up.”

His hair might look like the Fresh Prince’s. But Noel’s angular frame and long reach have drawn comparisons to Kentucky’s Anthony Davis, the 6-10 center who led the Wildcats to the national championship as a freshman this season.

Davis averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds, and took over games on the defensive end with five blocks per game. Noel, who is from Massachusetts and attended high school in New Hampshire, is expected to take Davis’ spot for the Wildcats after picking Kentucky over Syracuse and Georgetown this week. Davis is expected to turn pro this month.

“He’s a great player. I’ve got respect for him,” Noel said of Davis. “But at the end of the day, he’s his own player and I’m my own player. We’re different people. I do understand we play similar, though.”

North Carolina-bound Brice Johnson, who also will play for the East squad Saturday night, believes Noel is actually a better defender than Davis was in high school. Johnson played with Noel at the Nike Hoops Summit last month in Portland, Ore., where he learned how Noel got his nickname, ‘The Eraser.’

“I think I can get a shot off on him one time if I get my feet right. He’s a great shot-blocker. He’s very long. He’s just an amazing athlete, really,” said Johnson, a 6-9 forward from Orangeburg, S.C.

“He’s way better than Anthony Davis. He’s way better than he was in high school,” Johnson added. “He just needs to work on his offensive game a little bit more, because he really doesn’t score like that. But he’s working on it. He’s getting a little better.”

Kentucky coach John Calipari was criticized during the Wildcats’ title run for turning his program into a six-month, NBA feeder system. But the way Calipari has embraced the one-and-done rule while churning out lottery picks makes Kentucky an attractive stopover for many top prospects, for however long they stay.

Given that his offensive game still needs work, Noel’s stint in Lexington could last longer than Davis’.

“I definitely won’t go in there thinking about one-and-done,” Noel said. “The only thing I need to do is go in there and think about getting better and doing what I have to do for my team to win games and get to a national championship.”

Noel, who has more than 19,000 followers on Twitter, announced his college choice on ESPNU Wednesday night by turning his head to reveal a UK shaved into the back of his head. It was the handiwork of James McDonald from VIP Barber Shop in south Charlotte.

Might Noel, whose brother Rodman is a linebacker at N.C. State, opt for a different, old-school hairstyle when he gets to Kentucky?

“The fade’s going to stay,” he said.
