CLINTON, SC (WYFF) - The Laurens County coroner said a Presbyterian College student and football player died after he was found unconscious.
Coroner Nick Nichols said Kyle L. Allen, 21, died after he stopped breathing due to alcohol intoxication.
He has ruled the death accidental.
A written statement from Hal Milam, director of media relations for the college, said a fellow student found Allen unconscious around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
Allen was taken to Laurens County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The State Law Enforcement Division is assisting in the investigation, which is standard procedure when there is a death on a college campus.
Presbyterian College Chief of Staff Bob Staton issued the following statement:
"Our deepest sympathies and sincerest prayers are extended to Kyle Allen's family, teammates and many friends. Our campus community grieves this untimely and tragic loss as we remember Kyle and his many contributions to the PC family."
According to PC's athletic website, Allen was a linebacker, who was redshirted in 2010 after transferring from Georgia Southern. The website states that Allen played for the Georgia Southern Eagles in 2009.
The website says Allen was recognized as a top player on the county, conference and district levels during his junior and senior years of high school. He was also the team captain and MVP both years.
Allen was majoring in business administration, according to the website.
