Vanderbilt coach annoyed at Kentucky schedule, SEC responds
Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings wants the same Southeastern Conference scheduling standards applied to Kentucky that are applied to his men's basketball team and the rest of the league.
The Commodores, who are preparing for their only Thursday-Saturday combination of SEC games this season, are a half game behind the No. 2 Wildcats at 3-0. Stallings said he is not bothered by his team's one day of rest between games at Alabama (today, 7 p.m. ET) and at home against No. 15 Mississippi State (Saturday, 7 p.m.).
But the league's second-longest-tenured coach wants to know why Kentucky will not play a Thursday-Saturday combo for the second consecutive season. And it's not just that. The Wildcats have Saturday games with four SEC opponents coming off Thursday night games — most of any team in the league.
"Go figure that one out for me, would you?" Stallings said. "We all agreed to do it, so if you have one, like we have one, I'm not going to complain. To not have any and to be able to play four teams that have to do it to play you that's not right."
Kentucky does have one Thursday game, March 1 vs. Georgia, but it's followed by a Sunday game at Florida.
The only other SEC teams not dealing with a quick turnaround this season are Auburn and LSU. Ole Miss was dealt the Thursday-Saturday combo a league-high three times.
The last time the Wildcats had a day of rest between SEC regular-season games, they lost as the No. 2-ranked team Feb. 27, 2010, at Tennessee.
Said SEC spokesman Craig Pinkerton in an e-mail to USA TODAY:
"The SEC's athletics directors have established a set of parameters to follow when building the men's basketball schedule. ... These parameters are in place to ensure that the schedule is as equitable as possible and enables the SEC to fulfill its contractual obligations with television. We make our best effort to balance out the Thursday-Saturday tandem among all of the teams."
