When Cal leaves, who do we get?
I don't think it will happen before he gets a championship, and probably not before his son graduates high school. But it is inevitable. Cal will try the NBA again. When it happens, who does UK get to replace him? I'm not asking for a wish list. Who do you think they might offer that would take the job. I'm betting Cal will be here 4 maybe 5 more years. I'm also betting it will be a former cat, if they keep performing. Thoughts?

Thats a tough one, I think UK would go after some ex-NBA coach (Larry Brown). I would hope they stay away from hiring a ex uk-player / coach from somewhere. I would take Pat Riley and thats about it.

I'd hope someone whispers in his ear, "Rick Pitino."
I don't see how he'd make a different run in the NBA than he did before.

I think Brown and Riley are both to old. I like the guy from Butler after he gets more experience. and maybe by that time I think Billy D will be ready to leave UF

Hopefully they don't get a nerdy coach like Tom Crean or Mark Fox. Anybody that looks like they could have had the lead role in Revenge of The Nerds automatically has to be passed on.

Considering what Crean has done at Indiana so far, I don't think he'll be in the running and I'm not big on Fox. I know some people have a straight on love affair with him, but not me.
But if Cal decides to leave to stupidly pursue another NBA run, UK will need to get the biggest name/winner that either is or isn't available. No more Billy G mistakes.

Re: When Cal leaves, who do we get?
Riley is too old and Larry Brown has gone crazy. Look at the Bobcats early this year.
Think Dan Issel, Tom Izzo, Rick Barnes and all those names are past and not going to switch. Not at all interested in Pitino nor Pelphrey nor Macy.
If Cal left tomorrow, I'd try to get Sean Miller first from Arizona since he was at Xavier and worked under Herb Sendek, formerly on Pitino's staff. I'd also call the Butler coach and see what we could do there. Would probably call Jay Wright of Villanova. Not real high on the Pitt coach.
I've always liked Tom Crean but I'm not impressed with his work at Indiana so far. He might leave if he was offered at UK and with that support, I think he would do very well. Just think IU is a lot tougher rebuilding job than most think.
Might take a look at Travis Ford at Oklahoma State. He'd come in a New York second.
Bottom line, I'm going to go young or pre-40 for sure that has some connections to the NBA and has had some major successes with recruiting and former players now playing in the NBA like Crean.

You may find out pretty soon. I think the Kings are going to throw a ton of $$ at Cal in the off season.

Re: When Cal leaves, who do we get?
It's going to happen, sooner than later. I still think he will stay to get a NC. Money is money, but his previous run in the NBA wasn't very good, as was most of the the great collegiate coaches. Pay them, and watch them fail. I can't fault any coach for chasing the dream and getting paid. I will continue to laugh at the teams that pay these coaches out of the NCAA.

Re: When Cal leaves, who do we get?
And the Kings seem like they are just dumb enough to do it. Why move to LA? You're competing against the Lakers and Blake Griffin. That's a bonehead move. But that's the way these idiot owners think. They think if those other guys are doing so great there, no reason we can't. We just need blah blah blah to get the fans excited. That's where Cal comes in. And then in a couple of years they will figure out that it takes a hell of a lot more than some hot shot college coach to get die hard Lakers fans to switch to Kings fans and Cal will be on his way back to the next available college job. Hopefully he is too smart for this, but enough zeroes can turn a guy stupid.
