Denver radio and TV personality Denise Plante's youngest son was hospitalized last week after swallowing a round ball toy filled with more than 20 magnets.
Plante, the KOSI radio and Colorado & Co. host, posted an X-ray of her son's torso on her Facebook page today. "He stuck them in his mouth while joking around," she said in the post and in a similar blog post on the radio station's website.
The youngster has been through three surgeries and is expected to stay in the hospital this week, according to Plante.
"He has five to six holes in his intestines and one hole in his stomach," Plante's Facebook post said. "He is on a feeding tube and having his stomach pumped 24-7."
In 2008, the Consumer Product Safety Commission listed magnetic toys as the fourth on its annual list of the five most hazardous toys.
"When kids swallow the magnets they can snap together inside their bodies, tearing through their organs and causing gruesome injuries," the report said. "Doctors have compared the damage caused to knife and gunshot wounds."
