Calipari frosh out of alternatives

By Richard Skinner • Enquirer contributor • February 2, 2011

While it's understandable for John Calipari to want more from his upperclassmen, he can't lament having freshmen being forced to carry the load in big games and continue to rely on freshmen for the bulk of his talent.

Calipari was rightfully disappointed in the performance of his three upperclassmen - senior Josh Harrellson and juniors Darius Miller and DeAndre Liggins - in Tuesday's 71-69 loss at Mississippi. The trio combined to score nine points, grab 12 rebounds, have just three assists and commit six turnovers in 80 minutes.

UK's three freshmen - Terrence Jones, Brandon Knight and Doron Lamb - combined for 57 points, leading Calipari to say after the game, "I told 'em (afterward) we can't go on the road and expect freshmen to carry us."

That's all well and good, but in the way Calipari has opted to recruit - taking mostly one-year mercenaries seeking to quickly jump to the NBA - he's going to likely be relying on freshmen to carry the load almost every season.

There's nothing wrong with Calipari wanting to recruit the best players he can and most of the best players want to leave early.

That being said he also can't bemoan the fact that he has to have freshmen carry his team, because they did last season (Patrick Patterson aside), they've had to for most of this season and with at least Jones and possibly Knight leaving early for the NBA, freshmen will have to carry a heavy load next season, too.

He better get used to it, because he's the one shaping the roster.
Cal wants more

UK coach John Calipari continues pushing Terrence Jones to be more assertive and to do it more consistently and he made that point after Tuesday's loss even though Jones scored nine of UK's final 14 points over the last 5:33 of the game.

"I wish Terrence played that way the whole game," said Calipari. "But he just doesn't have that mind-set.''

Jones, who finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, has actually averaged 21.0 points per game in UK's three SEC losses.
QB position thin

With UK outshooting Ole Miss from the field on Tuesday night 49.0 percent to 42.9 percent it made the Wildcats 15-1 on the season when shooting a higher percentage than their opponents this season.

The Wildcats also fell to fell to 13-1 when outrebounding a foe after having a nine-rebounding edge against Ole Miss.

With UK's loss on Tuesday Calipari fell to 51-8 in his first two seasons as UK head coach, equaling the 51-8 start of Tubby Smith. Smith extended his start to 54-8.
