Cal was the only non African-American on ESPN's roundtable panel honoring Dr. Martin Luther King. He was honored to be part of the group. His players were proud of their coach.
"It takes courage to go up there and not being an African-American and just go up there and talk in front of so many people," says Terrence Jones.
Jones' comment is the strongest on any topic this year from a UK basketball player.
"That's why he (Cal) is one of the great leaders in my life, just because he has a lot of courage. He is a great leader and a great speaker."
Cal had people compliment him for his apprearance on ESPN while he went recruiting in Chicago.
"The best call I got was from my daugher telling me that you know, just proud that I was asked to be on the panel," says Cal. "She said Dad, do you understand? Just to be asked to be there was something special for her she said."
Cal will fight for his players to get a fair chance at whatever they want to do.
"I want all my guys here that have an opportunity to be a head coach, to be a head coach, on their merit, not based on if they are white or black, or Latin-American, or whatever," says Cal.
Cal talked to his team about how they are different because they wear Kentucky across their chest, and they should never forget that.
"Because they have uniforms on, you are treated different. If you didn't have the uniforms on you would be treated different. They have to understand that there is still a ways to go and because they are content in how they are treated, there is still a reason to stand up and make sure that if there is anything unjust that they see out there that they state it and you say something."
Dr. King would be proud of Cal's message.
