The NCAA eligibility appeal hearing for Kentucky freshman center Enes Kanter—technically, his second before this committee—was scheduled to be at 2 p.m. ET Thursday by conference call, a source told Sporting News.
Kanter is a 6-11 center from Turkey who spent the 2009-10 academic year in the United States playing prep school basketball in California before committing to attend UK.
Enes Kanter could have an answer on his eligibility in the near future as the NCAA held his appeal hearing by phone on Thursday. (AP photo) The NCAA approved his academic eligibility, but he has not been permitted to compete as the NCAA considered amateurism issues that developed from Kanter's time with the Fenerbahce Ulker club in Istanbul.
The NCAA's eligibility staff ruled Kanter “permanently ineligible” in November, after the Kanter family agreed with the organization's finding that his family received more than $30,000 from the club during his three years there.
The Kanters claimed the majority of that money was spent on educational expenses—tuition and tutors—which they argue is similar to a prep school scholarship for an American youth. The rest sits unused in a bank account.
Dr. Mehmet Kanter told Sporting News in December that he offered to pay back the entire amount, in the same manner as Kansas freshman Josh Selby was permitted to pay back roughly $6,000 in extra benefits he was provided while a high school player. The NCAA declined the offer and ruled that Kanter could not play.
UK appealed that ruling and was waiting for a decision when the NCAA declared Auburn quarterback Cam Newton could continue his college football career because he was not aware of his father's admitted scheme to attempt to sell his son’s commitment to Mississippi State. At that point, UK asked to have Kanter's eligibility reconsidered, according to a source, because of similarities in the two cases.
“I been saying from beginning of the review there has never been any monetary exchange between Enes and Fenerbahce,” Mehmet Kanter said in an e-mail to Sporting News. “Enes was 16 years old, never had any knowledge about any accounts and everything has been between me and Fenerbahce.”

I believe nothing will change and we will never see him on the court. I'm ready to get the word and move on.

Actually something did change that pissed me off more. If the Newton, Selby, and OSU stuff had not happened I would have been disappointed but would have gotten over it. After they ruled so quickly on Cam Newton, let Selby "pay back" the money he gained, then let the OSU players "postpone" their suspension, I have lost all faith that there is any justice whatsoever in the NCAA.
Cam and OSU were allowed to play for the simple fact that they would have lost money otherwise.

That here is probably why the Kanters hired an attorney and I would support them filing suit against the NCAA if he has been or will be ruled ineligible once again. It's a bunch of hypocritical crap that the OSU boys got to play in the bowl game after doing what they did and I for one feel Ohio State's win should be vacated for that reason.

They can't rule him ineligible in light of their other recent decision, but I'm afraid they will. I hope the Kanter's sue the hell out of them if they do. They turned down thousands of dollars to keep his amateur status in tact. Ruling him permanently ineligible will be a crime.

Re: Kanter ruling today?
I'm all sorts of confused. Has the NCAA rendered a SECOND ruling and today's hearing was a SECOND APPEAL?
Reading other UK sites, folks are saying that the NCAA has said NO to Enes twice and today was in fact an appeal like the time just prior to UK stopping it and resubmitting new info.
So are we waiting for the NCAA's SECOND ruling or the SECOND APPEAL? Just asking because I dont remember reading anything about a second ruling coming down from the NCAA themselves rather than an appellete body.

From what I've read we are waiting on a second appeal. They are now reporting that the first appeal was actually denied when most were reporting that it was never finalized before UK asked them to consider it again again. Sounds like it's not going to matter and they are going to deny him again. I have also heard any lawsuit will not produce much due to the fact that he is not an american so he will not get the same considerations.
More BULLPOOP.

The NCAA is a complete joke. They are hypocritical. It is all about the money. I am going to stop now. If I keep on going it is going to get ugly.

Nice read.
If there was ever any doubt it's all about the money, it was removed this year.

BULLPOOP! I just got home been outta town, NCAA is nothing but a joke. I hate to say this but if Enes came from a poor family he probably would have been able to play. His parents have been honest and so has Enes and the NCAA has takes sides of players who flat out lie , just unreal.
Re: Kanter ruling today?
I'm surprised at how pissed I was, haha... It's not like I didn't expect it.
I do stand by my statement earlier, though: I want Mark Emmert to be gone in 6 months.
The NCAA, while it has become incredibly bureaucratic, is still an association made up of the schools it consists of. It's about damn time somebody stood up and said "enough is enough." I really hope this becomes the straw that breaks the camel's back, and that we can finally see change in the corrupt organization that the NCAA has become.
Perhaps President Todd can pick this up as his last big project before retiring. Hehe...

NCAA is nothing but a big joke I am pissed as hell. ENES needs to get a NCAA SUCKS shirt and wear it to the rest of the games
Re: Kanter ruling today?
The NCAA is about the student's, right. It is another day and time, but the NIT was the POOP back in the day. I'd love for some powerhouse schools to MOFO them and start a new entity.

Re: Kanter ruling today?
Look at it this way. He's missed so much time now even if they let him back he'd be so far behind it would probably mess the team up more than help anyway. Who's minutes would he get? Harrelson? Harrelson is playing great. Do you want to take minutes from him?

Re: Kanter ruling today?
You're kind of right gator, but we'd be getting jorts production as a backup, or in some lineups, as a supplement. Regardless, UK will win the SEC without Enes. Our chance for a serious run is diminishes somewhat without him.

Re: Kanter ruling today?
UK could have used another big man, but the point is if the NCAA is going to make rules, just don't use em when you feel like it. The kid and his family was more honest then other players that are able to play that took money. The NCAA is totally screwed up.
