Thursday, Harrellson said all Big Blue Nation cares about is "us whooping them so hopefully we can do it for them." He delivered in a big way.But at the end of the day, Josh Harrellson cemented his legacy in a Kentucky uniform.
The senior big man, who has had his share of ups and downs during his UK career, celebrated his highest high Friday, setting career-highs with 23 points and 14 rebounds as the Wildcats made themselves at home in Louisville's new arena, propping their feet up with a comfortable 78-63 win over the archrival Cardinals.
“At first he didn’t know what to say. He didn’t say nothing,” Harrellson said of UK coach John Calipari. “He didn’t know what to say. He just looked at me like ‘did you really just do this?’"
Harrellson said he even surprised himself. "I never would have expected this. It's one of the best games I've ever had and I'm just happy as can be. It feels great."
With UofL coach Rick Pitino bound and determined to double team Terrence Jones on nearly every touch, Harrellson often found himself the beneficiary.
"We had great respect for him," Pitino said of Harrellson. "We obviously wanted to take away Jones but we didn't rotate."
Harrellson said Calipari had the Cats working on that dynamic all week in practice.
"He just kept getting doubled and I kept making myself available to him and he kept feeding me the ball," Harrellson said. "We worked on it all week sealing the weakside guy and finding the open spot."
Harrellson was nothing short of a one-man wrecking crew. He hit 10 of 12 shots. He scored big baskets in the first half to get the Cats started. His 3-pointer from the top of the key gave UK its longest lead at 44-26 with a tick under 16 minutes remaining. He scored timely buckets in the second half to help keep the surging Cardinals at bay.
But Harrellson's breakout performance actually began shortly after UK's Blue-White scrimmage in late October after Harrellson took to Twitter after Calipari failed to acknowledge his 26-rebound effort. That led to 30-45 minutes of extra conditioning prior to practice and a renewed dedication from Harrellson to improve.
"At first, I hated it and looked at it as punishment," Harrellson said. "When I first started, I just wanted to quit. But there was too many people relying on me. My teammates, I couldn't let them down. I just stuck through it. Then I looked at it as making me better because each game I got progressively better and better."
Calipari said on a roster full of star power last season, he didn't pay Harrellson, who was buried on the bench, much attention. Calipari couldn't help but notice Harrellson Friday.
"I'm just proud of him 23 points and 14 rebounds," Calipari said. "What we coaches like to do is work with the good guys and the guys that are struggling we just push them aside. What he has shown me is every kid deserves everything we have to help them get better. It's an emotional rush."

I was at a buddies house, had a lot of people over there. One friend of mine said right before the game Harrellson sucks! Of course he is a U OF l FAN, I just laughed at him. But he did bet 100 bucks on the Cats!
