Youth deer hunt next weekend
Kentucky's youth-only firearm deer hunt (ages 15 and under) will be next Saturday and Sunday. Regular license requirements, bag limits and zone restrictions apply.
Young hunters must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. The adult may hunt only with a bow and must remain in a position to take control of the youngster's firearm. However, the adult cannot handle the gun for the youngster.
“Youth hunters must be able to handle and control the firearm independently,” state deer biologist Tina Brunjes said.
Last year youth hunt participants checked 4,024 deer. The previous year they checked 2,266.
“Over the last five years the harvest has averaged 3,747 deer,” Brunjes said, “(but) severe weather such as a rainstorm or heat wave can essentially wipe out a season.”
The early muzzleloader season will be Oct. 16-17, and the modern gun season will open Nov. 13. For information check the 2010 Hunting and Trapping Guide or go to www.fw.ky.gov.

I'm taking a friend's 12 year old son Saturday. Unless the weather is crappy, he will kill, well, he'll have the chance to kill, his first deer. I saw 5 bucks out of this blind two Saturday mornings ago. I hope to talk him into passing on the first doe he sees, but I'll leave it up to him. Will be fun.

Bless his heart. We had a big doe at 10 yards. We're in a ground blind, and she has no clue we're within a mile of her. He shot, and she still jumped the string. He's shooting a recurve, and she just dodged it. I am working on finding him a used compound. His parents are getting him a rifle as well. I felt so bad for him. He felt better after I told him about some of my misses.

Happens to everyone. He will just get a big buck next time that will make up for it.

Cali,
Tell him I've missed 3 does so far this year. A few factors I could blame but basically it was because I didn't take my time.
Oh well. I hope to scare another one this weekend. With the scrapes and rubs I'm finding things could get interesting Saturday. I'll probably even break out the grunt call. Maybe I'll get lucky and miss a buck this time.

Oh well, at least you're seeing the females. As long as you are, then the next 2-3 weeks should produce some buck sightings. I hear you on the buck sign. There are scrapes and rubs all around my stand where I killed the fuzzy buck last year. Damn shame I haven't been able to get a single deer pic since Sep 21. I have had it with Bushnell trail cameras. Got ANOTHER replacement on the way, to replace the replacement camera I got two weeks ago, and never worked. It had a stuck trigger, and took 2300 pictures rapid fire-2 every 30 seconds. Geez, their cameras, and reputation, suck at this point on the trail camera front.
