UPDATE: Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio has simply said in response that Rainey is "no longer a part of the team."
Chris Rainey, a University of Florida receiver, was arrested at 12:30 a.m. ET Tuesday on suspicion of aggravated stalking, the Gainesville (Fla.) Police Department said in a statement that announced the felony charge.
Rainey allegedly threatened the life of a woman he'd been dating on and off. The Associated Press reported that Rainey spent the night in jail and appeared in court Tuesday morning.
Police said Rainey was apparently upset that the alleged victim missed his call, which prompted Rainey to send a text message that said, "time to die."
Once officers arrived at the woman's residence, Rainey allegedly said "wait and see what happens when they leave." At that point, officers went to Rainey's on-campus residence and arrested him.
In court Tuesday, the woman involved, Kelly Anderson, said: "I did not want to have him arrested last night. When the police came, I signed papers to not press any charges. I don't fear for my safety. I think he should be released on his own recognizance."
Anderson's sister placed the call to police just to defuse the situation, saying, "This is not an emergency."
"We will look at the case and the circumstances involved and make a decision as to what charges, if any, are appropriate to pursue as quickly as possible but no decision is going to be made this week,'' Gainesville state attorney Bill Cervone told Florida Today.
Rainey, a 22-year-old senior, is a starter for the Gators, although he missed part of Saturday's game with a concussion.
