Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner Barnett Lawley said Thursday he reluctantly signed an order closing state waters in the Mississippi Sound to fishing due to the presence of oil from the leaking Deepwater Horizon well.
Lawley said he made the decision after long discussions with state health officer Dr. Don Williamson and other department heads.
“It makes me sick having to close these waters,” Lawley said.
The new closures — which took effect Thursday at 6 p.m. — run from the Alabama-Mississippi state line eastward to the Dauphin Island Bridge, including Grand Bay, Portersville Bay, Heron Bay, and bays on the north side of Dauphin Island. Little Dauphin Island Bay remains open.
Mississippi waters in the sound that remain closed are bordered by the state-federal water boundary on the south, 88« 39Ã W longitude on the west, 30« 18Ã N latitude on the north, and the Mississippi-Alabama state boundary.
Lawley made his decision a day after Marine Resources Division biologists sampling the size of brown shrimp across the sound discovered small amounts of oil on the nets when they were pulled back onboard. Oil was found at seven locations in Alabama waters of the sound on Wednesday. In Aloe Bay, which was the only place they saw sheen on the water, no oil turned up on the nets.
