USC backup quarterback Aramis Hillary and his brother, CoCo Hillary, were arrested early Thursday morning in Lexington County on alcohol-related charges, according to documents provided by the West Columbia Police Department.
Aramis Hillary was charged with underage drinking and drunkeness, and CoCo Hillary was charged with driving under the influence. Both men were released on personal recognizance bonds later Thursday.
Aramis Hillary, a redshirt freshman from Edgefield, is among a number of quarterbacks competing for the Gamecocks' No. 2 job this spring.
Athletics department spokesman Steve Fink said he did not know if coach Steve Spurrier has spoken with Aramis Hillary, but said it is university policy that any student-athlete who is arrested is suspended indefinitely.
CoCo Hillary is a senior Appalachian State wide receiver.
According to the incident report filed by the arresting West Columbia police officers, patrol officer Matthew Deas saw a green Honda Accord going 10 miles over the speed limit passing another car in the 100 block of Meeting Street, which is a 35 mph zone.
After stopping the car, Deas spoke to the driver and his passenger, later identified as CoCo and Aramis Hillary, respectively. The officer said the vehicle smelled like alcohol and there were two clear plastic cups containing an orange liquid on the floor in front of Aramis Hillary.
The report said Deas ordered both men out of the car, and that CoCo Hillary told him the cups contained vodka and orange juice.
Deas then placed both men in handcuffs and noted a strong smell of alcohol emanating from both. Deas said CoCo Hillary's breath was slurred, his eyes were glassy and he swayed on his feet. He said Hillary told him he'd had two drinks since 11:45 p.m.
A search of the car turned up open and partially filled bottles of UV vodka and Bacardi Silver Mojito in the back seat, an open bottle of Bacardi Silver Lemonade on the passenger-side floorboard and an open bottle of Bacardi Silver Watermelon in the glove box. There also was an unopened bottle of Bacardi Silver Lemonade in a back pack that CoCo Hillary said belonged to him.
CoCo Hillary consented to and failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the West Columbia Police Department for a voluntary breath test. The results indicated a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent. Hillary then was booked into the Lexington County jail.
Aramis Hillary was transported directly to the jail. He was not subject to field sobriety or breath tests because he was not driving the car, West Columbia Police Major Jackie Brothers said.
Aramis Hillary, who was a member of the 2009 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll, did not play for USC last season.
At Strom Thurmond High, he passed for 2,400 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 980 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior. Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 14 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the 19th-best player in the Palmetto State.
